Buying an electric vehicle?

Fully electric cars or BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles) are undoubtedly on the rise on the UK’s roads. However, when the revised date of the cut off in the UK for the production of petrol and diesel cars was announced last year no one quite foresaw the further pressure of fuel price that would be caused by global conflict. But is it now time to buy an electric vehicle?

Time to rethink fuel and energy

Along with rethinking the way we manage power in our homes, we need to reconsider the way we power our vehicles. For many of us an electric vehicle with a solar PV array could be a future proof solution, filling the car up for free with sunshine and potentially off-setting some of the costs of purchasing an electric vehicle in the first place.

So, is it time to buy an electric vehicle?

Tesla Model X Range 351 miles

Should your next car be electric? The trade in used electric vehicles is now taking off; in the first quarter of the year, sales more than doubled from last year, with 14,586 fully electric used cars changing hands. Of course the older the model the more issues it might have and the shorter the potential range.

Range is improving for electric vehicles

Range is definitely improving and the list of cars that have a decent range is growing all the time. Whilst the top range comes with a luxury price tag, we are thinking of the Lucid and Tesla, there are more affordable BEVs on the market. Lots of manufacturers are now offering mileage range of above 200 miles for under £35,000.

Availability of electric vehicles

Getting your hands on one might be the issue, with waiting list of 12 months for some EVs due to the global semiconductor shortage. The chief executive of Volkswagen, recently announced that the company had “sold out” of fully electric cars in Europe and the United States, so new customers will have to wait until 2023. It is not suprising though as the VW range is looking really good and performing well. The recent unveiling of the ID Buzz and ID Buzz Cargo, could revolutionise the leisure and work vehicle sector. Sustainability is a clear strategic goal too from VW, with a focus on recycled materials in the construction of the ID Buzz.

Are electric vehicles suitable for towing?

Until recently, many battery-powered models just weren’t rated to tow, their short ranges being rendered almost useless by the efforts of hauling a heavy load and their already hefty kerb weights resulting in a towing limit – so low as to be virtually useless. However, improvements in battery and motor technology have meant that adding a tow bar is no longer an issue, with some even matching traditional petrol and diesel machines for pulling power.

Whatever you need from a vehicle, there is no doubt that rising petrol and diesel prices, combined with soaring energy costs for homes and businesses, mean consider an electric vehicle combined with a solar PV system now really makes good sense. Imagine rather than filling up for £100+ at the pump, you could power your vehicle on sunshine alone! Not at home when the sun is shining? Add battery storage to transfer energy to your vehicle in the evening. Et Voila, we’re driving on sunshine!

With energy prices expected to continue rising, and selling power back to the grid no longer being of great benefit, it makes sense that families & businesses are increasingly looking to generate and store their own green energy through solar PV, battery storage and EV charging points for electric vehicles.

Future proof solutions

Want to future proof your home and lower your bills? Energy efficient solutions are here to make your home or business greener, cheaper and more energy secure.

Innovation in energy efficient solutions

Great new energy efficient solutions are now on the market. myenergi, as a company, started with the idea of diverting energy from domestic solar panels or wind turbines to hot water tanks to reduce energy consumption. Then with the idea that they could do the same with electric vehicle charging, and the realisation that the technology did not yet exist, the eddi and the zappi were born. The key to their success is the thoughtful and holistic approach that they have taken to ensure that the technology is future proof and really does reduce the money people spend on energy. Energy efficient solutions that really are future proof!

Understanding the eddi by myenergi – Fully Charged+

The company has seen extraordinary growth and this is undoubtedly linked to the amazing functionality of their products and their sustainable approach. my energi products look to load balance both the home and the grid, ensuring that their truly smart charger considers the overall functionality of your home. You don’t have to have a renewable source for a zappi to work but, if you do, you will benefit from the green energy it produces – which can be diverted into your car charging, your hot water or your household battery. The thought and development that has gone into the zappi, along with the eddi, future proofs your home and protects your main fuse by carefully and instinctively balancing the power requirements of your home.
